This project took place in an under-exploited district. Its objective was to contribute to the urban and functional renewal of the site by using neglected areas in a shopping centre that had lost much of its trade.
The multimedia library was designed to provide an aesthetic design deliberately in contrast with the existing structures, symbolising renewal and dynamism and creating a beacon for the local community.
Composed of three levels of concrete floors of the existing shopping centre, the central space was treated as a signature and light-enhancing communal area joining the peripheral zones; on the upper level, a free terrace between the buildings was reworked into a reading and activity terrace stretching out alongside the housing right up to the adjoining crèche, creating a series of terraces with the adjacent housing.
The facade of name panels was reworked as a coloured and translucent "skin" attached to the front of the existing structure, unifying the existing architecture with an aesthetic overlay.
